LEARN

THE AWOGS STORY

Every AWOGS product is designed and manufactured by Steve Williams, a veteran firefighter from the Atlanta area with over 20 years of service. Drawing on firsthand experience, Steve understands exactly what firefighters need in high-pressure situations. To improve safety in low-visibility and challenging communication environments, he developed durable, glow-in-the-dark decals. Years of rigorous testing under real-world conditions went into perfecting these products to ensure they perform when it matters most.

MEET

OUR FOUNDER

Steve Williams, founder of AWOGS, launched the photoluminescent movement in the fire service in 2007. He retired in 2018 as a driver/paramedic from Fulton County Fire Department’s Station 7 in south Atlanta. Married for over 23 years to his wife—also in public safety—Steve is a proud father of two: a daughter and a son who plays offensive line at a Power 5 university.

Steve’s journey began on a tragic day in December 1999, when six firefighters—known as the Worcester Six—lost their lives. Believing those deaths could have been prevented, he began developing a system to help disoriented firefighters navigate large commercial structures. His early design combined photoluminescent materials, reflective numbering, and detailed pre-plans to guide crews to safety. While ahead of its time, the concept laid the foundation for the firefighter-focused products AWOGS produces today.

With more than three decades in the fire service—starting in a small, underfunded volunteer department in middle Georgia—Steve understands the operational and budget challenges faced by departments of all sizes. Drawing on that experience, he works hard to ensure even the smallest agencies can equip their crews with AWOGS products, giving them the confidence and safety they deserve.

To date, AWOGS products have been credited with at least six confirmed rescues of disoriented or trapped firefighters—though the real number is likely higher. Now leading AWOGS full-time with a dedicated team, Steve continues his lifelong mission: serving the fire service by serving the firefighters.
